Mustang Door Tag and Data Plate Decoder, 1964½–1973

The door tag, also called the data plate or warranty plate, is on the driver door and says how the car left the factory: body style and interior, paint, trim, build date, the sales district it was ordered through, and the axle ratio and transmission. Type what's stamped on yours and each box decodes on its own. Every code is in the tables below, year by year.

How to Read a Mustang Door Tag

The 1964½–1969 tag has the VIN across the top and seven codes in the row below, each named underneath; the 1970–1973 label prints the same codes. Codes only mean something next to their model year, which the VIN's first digit gives. Here is a 1967 hardtop's tag, box by box.

Where to Find the Door Tag

The plate repeats the VIN. The Mustang VIN decoder reads its plant and engine codes. Plates were sometimes swapped with doors, so a VIN that doesn't match the one under the hood or on the dash is worth a closer look.

Body Codes

The number is the body (65 hardtop, 63 fastback or SportsRoof, 76 convertible) and the letter the interior and seats. From 1971 the letter no longer says which interior.

Paint Codes

Some plates carry a digit in front of the letter (9A for A). B, C, F and Y changed color at the August 1964 changeover, so for a 1965 the decoder reads the build date to tell which one it is.

Through 1969 the date is the day and a month letter: 12K is the 12th of October.
